03/14/03

As the men’s basketball team heads into Friday night’s game against Temple University in the semifinal round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, it will be riding the shoulders of senior David West, who continues to garner awards from around the country. West was named All-American by ESPN.com, as well as the United States Basketball Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. West is Xavier’s first-ever First Team All-American selection by a major press organization, although Steve Thomas received 1964 First Team honors from Basketball News and the Helms Foundation. West was a Second Team All-American selection last season. West was named national player of the year earlier in the week by ESPN’s “College Gamenight” and is a finalist for both the Naismith and Wooden player of the year awards. On Wednesday, West set an Atlantic 10 Conference record as he was named the league’s player of the year for the third season in a row on Wednesday. West was also named to the A-10’s All-Defensive Team for the third consecutive year. He is second in the Atlantic 10 this season with an average of 20.4 points per game, and West leads the conference with 11.9 rebounds per game. Joining West on the conference’s First Team and the Defensive Team was Sato. Junior Anthony Myles was named to the All-Conference Third Team while freshman Dedrick Finn was named to the All-Rookie Team. Sato is averaging 18.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He enters the Atlantic 10 Tournament with 223 career three pointers, putting him 13 shy of the school record of 236 set by Lenny Brown from 1995-99. Myles, who is in his first year at Xavier after transferring from Olney College, was named to the All-A-10 First Team after averaging 10.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. This season, Myles is averaging an Atlantic 10-leading 3.6 offensive rebounds per game. West scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the No. 10 Musketeers to a 78-73 win over George Washington University in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday, March 13. Sato added 20 points and eight rebounds. The team is trying to become the first A-10 team to repeat as tournament champion since Temple repeated in 2000 and 2001. The Musketeers entered the tournament ranked No. 10 nationally by the Associated Press. The team has never before been ranked in the AP “Top 10” in March. It was ranked 13th in March 1997. This is the first time in the 27-year history of the A-10 that three teams enter the postseason ranked in the Associated Press Top 25—Xavier No. 10, Dayton No. 22 and Saint Joseph's No. 25. The last time at least three A-10 teams were ranked in the Top 25 was in November 1998 when Temple was No. 7, Xavier No. 16, UMass No. 23 and Rhode Island No. 25. Xavier is also ranked ninth in the latest Sagarin ratings for USA Today and 13th in the latest RPI Ratings for CollegeRPI.com.
