Inner-city children visit the campus

College students host a day of programs and activities

10/30/02

Approximately 30 inner-city school children are spending Saturday, Nov. 2, on campus as part of a newly created "Big Kids on Campus" program. The goal of the program is to expose the children to college life, show them the benefits of getting a good education and provide them with people to look up to. Each child receives a T-shirt, nametag and bag containing educational gifts such as flash cards, activity books and toys. Also in the bag are packets of information about Xavier financial aid and scholarship opportunities. They are then paired with a buddy for the day with whom they hang out, tour the campus and residence halls and eat brunch and dinner with. At the end of the day, they go roller skating at the Fun Factory in nearby Norwood. The children are residents of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority’s low-income apartment complexes English Woods and Millvale Homes. Members of the CMHA are serving as mentors along with Xavier students and resident assistants . For more information about "Big Kids On Campus," call Blake Barnett, event coordinator, at 513 924-8677.
