Twenty-one people traveled to Guatemala from June 11-20. Nine students, eight practitioners, three faculty, and the Dean of Xavier’s College of Social Sciences, Health and Education participated. The students will follow up with more course-related activities this fall around servicing underprivileged populations. The practitioners donated their time and expertise.

Two Xavier Chemistry Graduates Publish Pivotal Study in International Journal

Dawn M. Makley, a 2007 magna cum laude graduate of Xavier University, has co-authored an article published in the journal Nature. The research will aid medicinal chemists in making biologically-active compounds that might battle disease. Makley was a double major in chemical science and biology at Xavier and is currently a PhD candidate in chemistry at Vanderbilt University, working under the mentorship of Professor Jeffrey N. Johnston, a 1992 graduate of Xavier’s chemistry department.

On Tuesday, July 20 at approximately 10:00 a.m. the first move will be made to the new Michael J. Conaton Learning Commons (CLC) located on the southwest corner of Dana and Ledgewood Avenues. Other moves will be made during the rest of the week. The moves include Discovery Services and the math and writing academic labs. A total of 24 faculty and staff will be moved during the week.

Women"s Center Reprises Popular Exhibit

The Xavier University Women’s Center is again hosting “1000 PeaceWomen,” an exhibit first shown in January 2008 at the Center. It aims to connect and strengthen women's peace efforts around the globe so that a strong, cross-sectoral and global women's peace movement will emerge. The exhibit opens July 13 at the Women's Center located at 1415 Dana Avenue and will be open to the public from 8:30-5, Monday through Friday. Admission to the exhibit is free.

Twenty years after it was torn down, a piece of the Berlin Wall is going back up – this time as a monument to freedom. On July 3 from 5:30-9:30 pm, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will dedicate a graffiti-covered 4-by-13-foot section of the Berlin Wall as a monument to its fall in 1989.
