Xavier's Board of Trustees approves construction of a new residence hall to house 525 students

The complex includes a new dining hall and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011 | December 17, 2009

At its Dec. 11 quarterly meeting, the Xavier University Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new residence hall complex housing approximately 525 students in suite-style living. A new dining facility with a seating capacity of up to 800 is included in the plans and replaces the Hoff Marketplace dining hall in the Cintas Center where students now take all their meals.

The new complex, totaling 240,000 square feet, will be ready for occupation in the fall of 2011, which means students starting as freshmen next fall may move in to the new building in their sophomore year. The complex is being designed primarily for sophomore housing. Providing housing for an additional 500 students is expected to meet increased demand caused by the growth in the student body that occurred with this year’s freshman class.

Locating the complex and the expanded dining hall near the Gallagher Student Center, the existing residence halls and Bellarmine Chapel is expected to bring renewed energy and vibrancy to the core of campus while also unifying the rest of campus including the academic mall and new academic buildings under construction.

The project is scheduled to begin after the first of the year with the removal of four houses at the corner of Ledgewood and Herald. Offices currently in those buildings are being relocated to other spaces on campus. The project is being financed primarily through the issuance of bonds in mid-January.

As had been anticipated, construction of a new classroom building has been delayed temporarily for financial reasons as well as to give the University more time to complete a study of its current classroom and laboratory space and determine future needs. The delay gives members of the classroom planning committee more time to plan for the new construction.

Construction of the Hoff Academic Quad, which includes a new Williams College of Business, the Learning Commons and the Central Utility Plant, is on schedule to open next fall. Plans are underway for the transition of offices to the new buildings. As part of the current construction project, minor renovation work is being done in Schott Hall and McDonald Library.
