Xavier offers a week of events to celebrate the legacy and message of Martin Luther King Jr.

Events are being held from Monday, Jan. 21, through Friday, Jan. 25, on campus

Xavier offers a week of activities and events celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr. from Monday, Jan. 21, through Friday, Jan. 25. The events highlight King’s message of equality and community, including Breaking the Silence on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Gallagher Student Center. From 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., visitors will be encouraged to write down hateful words on a Wall of Expression, participate in a discussion at 4:00 p.m. in Room 330 and then help tear down and burn the wall.

The events are sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of Student Involvement, Center for Interfaith Community Engagement, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Career Services Center and Black Student Association. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. The University is closed on Monday, Jan. 21, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The week's events include:

Monday, Jan. 21—Breakfast and Dialogue: The True Meaning of the Dream

Discussion highlighting clips from the documentary “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Man of Peace In a time of War.”

Monday, Jan. 21—Inauguration 2013

Tuesday, Jan. 22—Exemplary Leadership Practices of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Gallagher Student Center Room 280
Learn about the leadership practices of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Tuesday, Jan. 22—Breaking the Silence
10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Gallagher Student Center

Wednesday, Jan. 23—Black Student Association Presents: Our Friend Martin

Thursday, Jan. 24—Troop 1500
5:00 p.m. Gallagher Student Center Clock Tower Lounge
Troop 1500 unites daughters with mothers who are serving time for serious crimes, giving them a chance to rebuild their broken bonds. Join in dialogue exploring King’s views on social justice issues surrounding women and girls.

Friday, Jan. 25—Ivy Prince Boyz II Men: Evolution of a Gentleman
7:00 p.m. Gallagher Student Center Theater
The Ivy Prince is a pageant that showcases the talents and contributions of the male students on campus. Tickets are $5.
