Xavier University is ranked among the top 50 master’s universities in the 2010 Washington Monthly college rankings, which focus on service-oriented schools. Xavier is ranked 12th in the master’s category.

This is the first time Xavier has been included in the Washington Monthly college rankings and the first time the magazine has provided a top-50 ranking for master’s universities. The magazine devised a “way to measure and quantify how well individual colleges and universities were meeting their public obligations in the areas of research, service and social mobility.”

“This recognition by Washington Monthly with its focus on service is very gratifying as it is part of Xavier’s Jesuit mission and tradition to be men and women for and with others,” says Xavier president Michael J. Graham, S.J.

The magazine rated the master's universities in three areas: social mobility, research and service. According to Washington Monthly, no single category is considered more important than the other. Also, the final rankings “needed to reflect excellence across the full breadth of our measures, rather than reward an exceptionally high focus on say, research. Thus, all three main categories were weighted equally when calculating the final score.”

Each category includes several components. For example, community service was scored by measuring each school’s performance in such areas as ROTC programs, alumni serving in the Peace Corps and students participating in community service.
