Xavier University to Offer Bachelor of Social Work in Evening

Will allow working adults to pursue degree in social work

08/06/08

When classes resume at Xavier University in a couple of weeks, those wanting to pursue an undergraduate degree in social work will not have to give up their day jobs.

Xavier's Department of Social Work is offering students the chance to complete coursework for a bachelor's degree in social work in the evenings on a part-time basis. Those who have already completed their core coursework for a bachelor's degree should be able to finish their degree in approximately eight semesters of evening classes.

"Many students enrolled in CAPS have expressed interest in social work after taking a course as an elective," says Peg Hubbard of the Department of Social Work. "This change allows those who are employed full-time during the day to pursue a degree in the field that interests them."

Xavier has offered a bachelor's degree in social work ever since Edgecliff College became a part of Xavier University. Carolyn Jenkins, associate professor of social work, has been with the program since 1965. Xavier's was one of the first social work programs accredited when accreditation began in the late 1970s and Xavier social work graduates tend to have a higher acceptance rate into the better graduate schools. In 2007-2008, the BSW program had 51 students enrolled and 4 full-time faculty.

"Currently, you must have a four-year degree to use the title of social worker," Jenkins says. "Two-year programs are offered, but those graduates are not considered social workers because they cannot be licensed. There is a greater need for licensed social workers because there are more problems in our world today."
