Xavier University Selects Chartwells to be New Dining Service Partner
Big changes coming to Hoff Dining Center and campus
After a nearly yearlong comprehensive study, Xavier University has selected Chartwells, a division of Compass Group, as its new Dining Services Partner. A committee of students, faculty and staff selected Chartwells, after a thorough evaluation of the leading dining service management company proposals to manage dining, catering, and concessions services on the Xavier University campus. The partnership between Xavier and Chartwells commenced on July 1, 2008 and the initial contract will continue through 2013. Chartwells’ creativity and vision for the future of the Xavier campus along with its commitment to customer service were key ingredients in Xavier’s selection.
The vision presented by Chartwells was based on extensive research conducted by a team of Chartwells managers that included conducting electronic handheld surveys on campus, studying traffic patterns and conducting a comprehensive campus mapping study, listening to what is important to the Xavier community and utilizing their exclusive Millennials research. The end result of this research resulted in a customized solution perfect for the Xavier campus community.
A key component of Chartwells’ vision for Xavier is a newly renovated resident dining facility. Chartwells will implement its signature Pulse on Dining brand in the James Hoff Dining Center over the next 12 months. Pulse on Dining highlights a complete collegiate dining experience with creative and flexible menu design, culinary experiences, interactive technology and dynamic hospitality. Some key features of the new Hoff Marketplace include a newly relocated hostess station with an Outtakes Food to Go station, the signature myPantry self assisted station, and open kitchen station, and a woodstone oven station as the centerpiece of the operation. Additionally, customers will be able to purchase premium options like steaks, lamb chops, and salmon for an optional extra charge at the station.
Chartwells also plans to introduce a new menu for Ryan’s Eatery & Pub sit down restaurant as well as a new enhancement - Ryan’s Xpress - in the Gallagher Student Center. Similar to popular express options at popular restaurants like Applebees and Ruby Tuesday, Ryan’s Xpress will feature many of the most popular menu options offered on the menu available in an express take out option.

Chartwells vision for the Xavier campus addressed all segments of the campus community and illustrated the opportunities as the Xavier campus continues to expand. Chartwells demonstrated their creativity through various partnerships and promotions planned for the campus throughout the year such as providing discounts in select dining venues to students who wear a button that was distributed to students for attending SGA, Resident Hall Meeting or club sports. Now that’s the creativity that Xavier is looking for!”
As part of Chartwells vision for better meeting student needs, two new dining operations are planned to open over the next two years on campus. In year one, Chartwells will open an Outtakes Quick Cuisine kiosk in the busy academic part of campus. Through traffic studies conducted on campus, Chartwells realized that many students on the academic campus do not have enough time to go to a campus dining venue to eat. Therefore, an express grab and go option offering fresh made sandwiches, salads, snacks and coffee will be implemented. Chartwells plans to partner with the Xavier Student Business Development Center to provide real business world management experience for Xavier students.
Additionally, with over 1200 students living on campus, Chartwells plans to open an Outtakes Convenience Store on the resident side of campus. Chartwells’ signature Outtakes Convenience Store will offer a wide selection of snack foods, grocery items and household items. Furthermore, Chartwells plans to upgrade all the concessions stands in the Cintas Center with new imagery and LCD menuboards as well as introduce new menus for the Joseph’s Room and concession stands.
Marketing was also a key factor in the selection of Chartwells. In its proposal, Chartwells provided a comprehensive plan on how they will market and communicate to each segment of the Xavier campus community. This included a variety of promotions, special events and non-traditional communication tactics. Chartwells will launch a new dining services web site, www.dineoncampus.com/xu, where users can find the latest menus and events, create a personal nutrition journal, use the various nutritional tools, purchase a meal plan or dining dollars online, download the latest PodCast, and much more. Chartwells will also implement text message marketing and an online convenience store.
