For the first time in the 8 year history of Xavier University Club Baseball, the Muskies have made it to the post season, clinching a regional playoff berth yesterday by beating Kentucky 5-4. The regional playoffs will be held in Huntingburg, IN the weekend of May 6th, where they will meet familiar foes Northern Kentucky, SIU-Edwardsville, and newcomer University of Minnesota.
The team was awarded the playoff berth by winning their District V East conference, maintaining a sparkling record of 9-1 (7-1 in the spring) through conference play. The road to the playoffs began back in October with a sweep of Northern Kentucky, and continued with a 3-game sweep of SVSU in March to jump out to 5-0 record. After losing a heartbreaker to WSU 4-3 in April to move to 5-1, the Muskies picked up 3 forfeit wins against ISU and pulled out nail-biter against UK to push their final record to 9-1.
From humble beginnings in 2004, the team has endured many a trying time. Small numbers plagued the club early on, as well as a brief setback when president Frank Perhacs quit the team after failing to be elected Founding Father. However, under the tutilage of Brian Duffy, Chris Heitker, and Aaron Sparn, the team began to rebuild and succeed. In 2008 and 2009, the team showed flashes of brilliance before dwindling down the stretch due to inexperience. In the Fall of 2009, the Muskies recorded their first winning season going 5-3, but failed to perform in conference play in the spring.
And then in 2010, harboring the largest incoming freshmen class the club had seen, the team expanded to a 30-man roster, led by Joe D'Agostino, Dave Dansart, Steve Rosenbaum, and Nate Ruhenkamp, and stormed through the fall and spring seasons to capture the glorius and coveted conference crown.
And now the team will venture to unchartered territory in an attempt to keep the dream season alive. If XUCB succeeds, they will move on to play in the NCBA DII World Series in Johnston, PA May 20th-24th. Stay tuned for further details.
