What a fall season it’s been for Xavier’s Women’s Club Rugby Football Club! We started out the season with a pretty good number of recruits along with all the returnees of last year, and, even though that number began to dwindle as the season went on, our energy remained high the whole time. Our first game was against Wittenberg University—it ended up being a loss, but our only loss of the entire season. After beating Marshall University in West Virginia, University of Kentucky, University of Dayton, and our biggest win of the season against Eastern Kentucky University (73-0), the Women’s Rugby not only had a nearly undefeated season, but also made it to Division 3 semifinals for the first time in the team’s existence here at Xavier.
We played our first playoff game against Ashland, Ohio, at Ashland. After playing in the frigid weather for 80 minutes, the Xavier Women’s Rugby team won handily, destined for the championship. The championship game was against Wittenberg, so, as the underdogs, it was time for us to show how our hard work would pay off. The next weekend, the team travelled to Columbus to play again in the cold weather. The game was a rough and close one, with possession and tries going back and forth—but again, the Women’s team pulls off a win, becoming the top team in D-3. So for the first time ever even being in playoffs, we also pulled off our first D-3 championship. It was a successful season to say the least.
