February 8, 2010

Xavier University’s Women’s Center is a supporter of Momentum 2010, a summit announced by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and First Lady Frances Strickland. Momentum 2010: Ohio Women’s Summit, is a statewide event to discuss and promote the status of Ohio women and girls in economics, education, and health. The Center is facilitating transportation on March 8.  Men and women throughout the Cincinnati community interested in attending should contact the Women's Center at 745-3940 by February 19th to reserve a seat. Summit reservations and payment are the responsibility of the attendee.

“The Xavier University Women's Center works to create a more gender equitable world through programs, advocacy, and research,” says Center director Jennifer Wies, PhD.  “Initiatives such as Momentum 2010 illustrate that the issues of gender discrimination, unequal distributions of resources, and disparate health outcomes are recognized by others throughout our state and that the women and men of Ohio are poised to create positive social change.”

The Governor’s Office for Women’s Initiatives and Outreach and First Lady Strickland will host the all-day forum on March 8, International Women’s Day, at the Vern Riffe Center in Columbus.  Cost to attend is $45. A statewide Young Women’s Summit for girls ages 12-18 is also being planned at the Columbus School for Girls on Sunday, March 7. Cost to attend is $5. Registration for both events and a detailed schedule of events and speakers for both days is at www.ohiowomen2010.org.

Momentum 2010 will be a series of workshops, panel discussions and speakers addressing access to higher education, women and leadership, violence against women, and the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering and math careers.  It will provide strategies to lead healthy, safe and financially stable lives, as well as enhance collaboration among women and women’s organizations. Participants will network with women members of Governor’s Strickland’s Cabinet.

The Xavier Women's Center has worked with the Governor’s Office for Women’s Initiatives and Outreach for the past year to develop and implement the vision for Momentum 2010.  As a Host Committee member, the Center has been actively recruiting other organizations to participate. Wies has served as a regional co-chair to facilitate participation of a diverse group of young women during the Young Women’s Day Summit.

A diverse range of speakers will participate, including Governor Strickland, First Lady Frances Strickland, Pulitzer Prize winner and Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Connie Schultz, philanthropist Mavis Leno, and diversity and inclusion expert Audra Bohannon. Valerie Jarrett, White House senior advisor and assistant to President Barack Obama for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, will serve as the keynote speaker. Jarrett is also chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls. Jarrett served as President/CEO of the Habitat Company before joining the White House. She also served Chicago city government in several roles, including deputy chief of staff for Mayor Richard Daley. She held membership on several corporate and non-profit boards prior to joining the Obama administration.
