U.S. Reps. Join Faith Leaders Urging Immigration Reform

| February 9, 2010

In an unprecedented show of religious support for just, humane immigration reform this year, Evangelical, Catholic, Jewish and Mainline Protestant leaders and Members of Congress will gather on a conference call with journalists tomorrow, February 10 at 11 am ET, to announce the delivery of thousands of pro-reform postcards to Members of Congress from people of faith in their states and districts and nearly 100 events across the country during President’s Day recess and beyond. Reps. Mike Honda (D-CA), Yvette Clark (D-NY) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) will join religious leaders on the teleconference.

Wednesday’s conference call with journalists is the official kick-off of “Together, Not Torn: Families Can’t Wait for Immigration Reform,” a nationwide mobilization of people of faith standing up for families being torn apart by our broken system, and immigration reform that keeps them together, creates pathways to citizenship and protects the dignity of all workers.

In light of immigration reform legislation introduced in December by Rep. Luis Gutierrez and the Obama administration’s commitment to take up this issue in 2010, the faith community is pressing political leaders to keep their promises on reform.
