Two Changes, Two Familiar Faces in Communications at Xavier University
Doug Ruschman, executive director for University Communications at Xavier University, announces two position updates, effective Aug. 1st.
Debora Del Valle becomes video and web producer.
Del Valle will manage efforts around the planning and execution of Xavier video projects, create content for Xavier web sites and maintain her role as a primary communications contact for Xavier’s safety plans. She joined Xavier as media relations specialist in 2002 and most recently has been director for public relations. She was a freelance writer/producer, working with clients such as General Motors, Audi, TVGuide Channel, ABC News and SPCA Cincinnati. She has won several Telly awards for video production. She spent 11 years as a TV news producer at WKRC in Cincinnati and WDIV in Detroit, where several of her newscasts received regional Emmy awards. She has also worked for the Associated Press and several Michigan radio stations.
“Deb is a valuable member of our University Communications team and is excited about this new endeavor,” says Ruschman. “She has significant experience in video and is the best person to assist with these efforts as we continue to expand our multimedia content for the Xavier community.”
Del Valle earned her BA in journalism with honors from Michigan State University. She lives in North Avondale.
Kelly Leon returns to Xavier as director for strategic communications.
Leon will oversee Xavier’s comprehensive public relations strategy, University-wide strategic communications and serve as Xavier’s spokesperson. The position is integral to the perception of the institution on campus, in the community, throughout the region and across the nation.
From 2007-2010, she was vice president for communications & community relations at Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC). Prior to joining 3CDC, Leon spent 11 years at Xavier, as director for media relations and later as associate vice president for public relations.
“Kelly is an exceptional communications professional who cares deeply about Xavier,” says Ruschman. “She will be an asset to our team and a strategic communications leader for the entire campus. Her outstanding connections in the community and region and will be very beneficial as we continue to enhance Xavier’s image.”
Leon holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Cincinnati and a master’s in journalism from the Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
In addition to her work at Xavier, Leon will continue to own Kelly Leon Communications, LLC. She also owns a Jazzersize franchise in Over-the-Rhine, was a member of Leadership Cincinnati Class 29, a finalist for a WE Lead Community Impact Business of the Year Award in Dec. 2011, a “Woman of Over-the-Rhine” honoree in 2010 and has won a number of Telly and Emmy awards for her work in television journalism. She lives in Mt. Lookout.
