What does the Xavier Launch-a-Business Competition have in common with American Idol? Creativity, determination and suspense!

And on Thursday, Sept. 16, the suspense will end in dramatic fashion as the Williams College of Business announces the winners of its first X-LAB Competition.

Xavier University faculty, staff and students are invited to attend as the College makes this major announcement. It will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Grand Atrium of Smith Hall, the College’s new home at Dana and Ledgewood Avenues.

X-LAB's special guest will be Bob Castellini, chairman of the Castellini Group of Companies, one of the nation's largest distributors of fresh produce. He also is chief executive officer and majority owner of the Cincinnati Reds.

The X-LAB winners will receive a year of advice and other support from the College’s faculty, executive mentors and MBA students to start or expand businesses, nonprofits and social enterprises. The intent is to give a big boost to the Greater Cincinnati economy.

More than 160 people have submitted applications to X-LAB. By Sept. 16, the X-LAB judges will have whittled that number to about five winners. The applicants represent fields as diverse as restaurant management, medical device manufacturing and social services.

Just like the winners of American Idol, X-LAB winners will have talent. But they will have something else as well: the backing of top-notch faculty members, business executives and MBA students who will help the winners turn Concepts into Reality.

People interested in attending can send an RSVP to Laura Frazier at frazier@xavier.edu. More information about X-LAB is available at www.xavier.edu/xlab.

On Sept. 12, WVXU-FM interviewed X-LAB Director Joseph Carter about the competition.
