Students Present at Psychology Conference

The week of March 8, a group of 11 undergraduate and 5 graduate psychology majors from Xavier University attended the Southeastern Psychological Association's annual convention. Of 143 submissions, eleven projects were given awards, and three of those were Xavier psychology majors - Krysten Knecht, Gerald McDonnell, and Kate Saunders.

Xavier junior Krysten Knecht of Mahtomedi, MN presented “Blame Attribution Based on Race and Family Size in a Criminal Context” with advisor Dr. Christian End. A 2007 graduate of Mahtomedi High School, Krysten is the daughter of Harold and Patricia Knecht.

Xavier junior Gerald McDonnell of Pembroke MA presented “Interdependent Versus Independent Self: How Self-Construal Levels Impact Social Anxiety” with advisor Dr. Christian End. A 2007 graduate of Boston College High School, Gerald is the son of John McDonnell.

Xavier junior Kate Saunders of Old Saybrook, CT, presented “The Effects of Speech Disorders and Powerless Speech on Employability” with advisor Dr. Christian End. A 2007 graduate of Greebrier East High School in Lewisburg, WV, Kate is the daughter of Marie Baumuller and Scott Saunders.

Xavier senior Elizabeth A. Craig presented “Can a smile enhance the perceptions of people with facial acne? A quantitative analysis” with advisor Dr. Christian End. A 2006 graduate of The Wellington School, she is the daughter of Robin and Dan Field (43082) of Westerville and Bruce and Tammy Craig (43001) of Alexandria.

Xavier junior Elyse Krause of Cincinnati presented “The effect of Jesus’ ethnicity and participants’ religiosity on likability and mood” with advisor Dr. Christian End. A 2007 graduate of Roger Bacon High School, Elyse is the daughter of Mary and Paul Krause.

Cincinnatian Beth Williams, a December 2009 graduate of Xavier, and (11730) Xavier senior Kate Phillips of East Islip, NY presented “Parental stress and its relationship to parent-reported autistic behaviors” with advisor Dr. Mike Nelson. A 2006 graduate of East Islip High School, Kate is the daughter of Kim and Logan Phillips. Beth graduated from Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati in 2005, and is the daughter of Mike and Karen Williams.

Xavier senior Gail Cengia of Dayton, daughter of Jim and Monica Cengia, presented “Perceptions toward overweight job applicants: do qualifications matter?” with advisor Dr. Christian End. Gail is a 2006 graduate of Archbishop Alter High School.

Xavier senior Elizabeth Fichtel of Mendota Heights, MN, daughter of Tim & Jeannie Fichtel, presented “Influence of training level on food perception and body satisfaction in Division I collegiate swimmers” with advisors Dr. Cindy Dulaney and Dr. Christian End. Elizabeth is a 2006 graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall.

Xavier senior David Kelly of Wildwood, MO presented “Social contagion in college: The positive and negative effects on college students” with advisor Dr. Christian End. A 2006 graduate of St. Louis University High School, David is the son of Brian and Lorna Kelly.

Xavier senior Sarah E. Bucher of St. Louis, MO, daughter of Mary K. Bucher, presented “Academic Performance of Early Juvenile Offenders” with advisor Dr. Kathleen Hart. Sarah is a 2006 graduate of Cor Jesu Academy.
