Xavier University and the Department of Art are pleased to present a Solo Thesis Exhibition by Paula Baumann, senior art major in Fiber Arts and Art History. The exhibition opens on Friday, April 27 through May 12, 2012.
Paula Baumann presents Green Textures an exploration of creating sustainable textiles. Ms. Baumann believes that fiber is a perfect medium for investigating sustainable textile production by creating textural elements in cloth. Each textural work presented was created from biodegradable and renewable fiber.
The artist states, “The earth provides beautiful colors from natural plants and insects. Simple, biodegradable dyes are readily available from dried cochineal bugs, madder roots, and rusted iron...After dyeing, a variety of additional manipulation is completed including Shibori resist, shaping to a form, and sewing, stretching or tearing.”
Each work represents a texture sourced from Paula’s personal observation or experience. The life situations that present texture-development opportunities are also explored.
Please join us for the artist reception on Friday, April 27, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Ms. Baumann will talk about her work at 7:00 p.m. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
