The Xavier University Army Reserve Officer Training Corps “All for One” Battalion will host a regional Best Ranger competition on April 18that several locations throughout the Cincinnati area, including Mt. Airy National Forest, Lunken Airfield and the Xavier Campus. This is the 10th year for the competition.
Mirrored after the US Army’s Best Ranger competition, this day-long challenge tests two-member Cadet teams in a series of events, including an Army physical fitness test, one rope bridge, hand grenade assault course, land navigation/orienteering, rifle marksmanship and patrolling, culminating in a 10K ruck march around Lunken airfield. The day begins at 5:30 a.m. and finishes usually around 10:00 p.m.
“The Xavier Best Ranger Competition is an awesome event bringing together some of the best Cadets form the area to test their mettle against one another,” says LTC Shane Ousey commander of Xavier’s battalion. “It is a long day of intense competition, but more importantly gives the Cadets a chance to bond and network with other Cadets who will become their future Second Lieutenant Army peers.”
Xavier University will be defending the title it won last year. The event is organized and run entirely by the Xavier ROTC Cadets with oversight from the Military Science Cadre. Therefore, it not only serves as competition but also as training for the future Army Officers of the All For One Battalion. Xavier has won the event eight out of the nine previous years and looks to continue that tradition this year with several strong teams entered.
Fifteen universities from four states will send 32 teams to participate, including: Bowling Green State University, Central State University, East Tennessee State University, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis, Michigan State, Morehead State, Ohio State, Ohio University, University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, University of Michigan, Youngstown State and, of course, Xavier. Almost seventy Cadets will compete for the coveted title of “Best Ranger.”
