The photography of Philip Groshong is on display in the gallery of the Cintas Center at Xavier University through Feb. 25. The exhibit opened on Jan. 10 for public viewing in the gallery area through the main entrance of the Schiff Conference Center. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Groshong has been a commercial photographer in the Cincinnati area for 25 years. He is the co-team photographer for the Cincinnati Reds, company photographer for the Cincinnati Opera and the Cincinnati Children’s Theatre, and a freelance photographer for Xavier, LaRosa’s and the Cincinnati Symphony.
The photos hanging in the gallery were taken using slow speed shutter technique. The show is entitled, “Drive-by Shooting,” because either the camera or the subject is moving. The slow shutter speed creates a blur on areas away from the focal point. Digital photography allows for techniques not possible with film.
“Motion, as a theme, can be found everywhere,” Groshong says. “It adds an element of discovery to any situation. I look for patterns, texture and color and re-photograph some situations many times even after I have an image that works.”
