Mercy Health Partners and Xavier Leadership Center Develop Nurse Leadership Program

CINCINNATI, Ohio, August 11, 2011 – Xavier Leadership Center (Xavier University) today announced that Mercy Health Partners has selected Xavier as its training partner for its innovative Nurse Leadership Development Program, a full suite of leadership development programs to be offered at Mercy Health Partners locations throughout Greater Cincinnati.

The program was developed in conjunction with the Greater Cincinnati Health Council and the Xavier School of Nursing, in response to growing needs to help nurse managers and directors operate more effectively in an increasingly challenging environment.

The 13-week program will focus on three core areas – Heath Care Business Essentials, Leading Teams and Organizations, and Improving How We Work. It incorporates two powerful immersion learning experiences as well. One is called CincyChef (which teaches team development and leadership concepts during an intense gourmet cooking competition). The second is a finance and accounting simulation experience designed specifically for hospitals.

Len Brzozowski, Executive Director for Xavier Leadership Center, explains that the program features another unique element as well. “We are also asking participants to complete a strategic project assignment (selected by senior Mercy Health Partners executives) as way of anchoring all the concepts taught in the program. We believe people learn best”, says Brzozowski, “when they have the opportunity to immediately apply what they have learned in their own work environment.”

According to Dawn M. Shaferly, Director, Strategic Learning and Workforce Effectiveness at Mercy Health Partners, the Nurse Leadership Development Program is a true partnership. “In addition to the strategic project assignment, there are several modules in the program where we are inviting senior Mercy executives to participate in select classes and talk to students about how the concepts they are learning can be applied in a large and dynamic organization like Mercy Health Partners. One of our goals with this program is to deepen the understanding of the link between our mission and strategy throughout our system.”
