The exhibit “Hearts Afire: The Legacy of Francis and Clare of Assisi” on the first floor of Xavier University’s McDonald Library features photographs, original paintings, textual commentaries and contemplative materials which reflect on Franciscan spirituality. The exhibit runs through Dec. 12 and is free and open to the public.

“The visitor is invited to explore the radical simplicity and single-heartedness of Christianity’s beloved saints,” says Gillian Ahlgren, professor of theology at Xavier. “Together they manifested the presence of God in a violent and fragmented medieval world. Francis and Clare’s desire for the fullness of communion created an alternative worldview rooted in simplicity of spirit and love.”

Ahlgren leads an annual pilgrimage to Assisi in June to explore the world of St. Francis and Franciscan spirituality.

The public is also invited to participate in two roundtable reflections on the Franciscan spirit for a new vista on contemporary circumstances. The roundtables are on Wednesday, Nov. 10, and Wednesday, Dec. 8. Both roundtables begin at 7:00 p.m. at the exhibit space and feature scholars, artists and pilgrims.
