Get-out-the-vote event on campus Monday features Jay-Z, Diddy, Mary J. Blige

11/02/08

A Countdown to Change get-out-the-vote event sponsored by the Obama for America campaign is being held on campus today, Monday, Nov. 3. This event impacts the campus community in a number of ways.  The following is an update on information you should be aware of:

EVENT DETAILS
The event is on the soccer field next to the O’Connor Sports Center. The gates open at 2:00 p.m. The event begins at approximately 3:00 p.m. and ends at approximately 4:30 p.m. This event is open to the public. No tickets are required. There is no seating. Those in attendance must stand during the event.

Neither Sen. Barack Obama nor Sen. Joseph Biden is scheduled to appear at this event. Hip Hop stars Mary J. Blige, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Sean “Diddy” Combs, along with media executive Kevin Liles, are speaking at the event. The artists are not performing at the event, but are encouraging young voters to be informed about their voting rights and to make their vote count.

PARKING
Members of the public wishing to attend the event are being directed to park in the Cintas Center parking lot. Event volunteers are located around campus to direct people to the soccer field. The upper level of the O’Connor parking lot is being reserved for VIPs and perhaps media. The lower level lot is also reserved handicapped spaces.

University staff who normally park in these areas are encouraged to consider other parking options.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
• Why is this event at Xavier?
Sen. Obama’s staff approached Xavier late last week about renting a space at Xavier for the event.

• Is Xavier supporting this event?
No. Xavier is working with Obama’s staff to coordinate the event, but is not providing any financial support. All expenses are being paid for by Obama’s campaign. Xavier is merely providing a venue, as it did when Sen. John McCain’s Straight Talk Express used the Conaton Boardroom in June.

• Why did Xavier agree to allow Obama to use the campus for this event?
This event falls within Xavier’s commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and to the orderly discussion of issues confronting society.
