Director of Xavier"s Nursing School Appointed to State Advisory Group
Sue Schmidt, director of Xavier University’s School of Nursing, has been appointed to the Ohio Department of Health’s Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) Education Advisory Group. She will be representing the Ohio Council of Deans and Directors of Baccalaureate and Higher Nursing Education Programs.
The Ohio Department of Health is leading a statewide expansion of the PCMH model of care in Ohio in order to control costs, improve health outcomes, enhance the patient experience, and ensure healthcare in Ohio is affordable. The PCMH model of care facilitates partnerships between individual patients and their personal healthcare providers and, when appropriate, the patient’s family. Care is managed using modern tools such as registries, information technology, health information exchange and other means to assure that patients get the appropriate care when and where they need and want it in a culturally appropriate manner.
Schmidt has been at Xavier for 33 years. She is a Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist and holds a certificate of authority to practice in Ohio as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. She has conducted several national and international presentations related to her occupational health research and won an international research award while at Research Triangle Park.
As an epidemiologist, she continues to do research in the epidemiology and rehabilitation of stroke patients along with managed care. Her national presentations and publications include topics on computer-based instruction, occupational health, stroke and managed care. Since 2004, she has been awarded over six million dollars in federal and state grant funding in support of program growth within the nursing school.
