Department of Music and Theatre Presents Annual Fall Music Festival
2012 Fall Music Festival November 5-8
Xavier University’s Department of Music and Theatre will host the 2012 Fall Music Festival from Monday, November 5 through Thursday, November 8. Admission is free to all events.
On Monday, November 5 at 7:30pm, renown violinist Brittany MacWilliams will be performing in Gallagher Theater with Dror Biran on piano. She will perform Debussy's Violin Sonata in G minor, Ravel's Violin Sonata in G and César Franck's Violin Sonata in A Major. Currently a member of the violin faculty at the University of Louisville School of Music, Ms. MacWilliams has an active career both as performer and educator. She made her professional violin debut at age ten with the Louisville Orchestra and went on to win numerous competitions including the Music Teachers National Association competition. Since then, Ms. MacWilliams has performed extensively as soloist and concertmaster in such diverse locales as Istanbul, Beijing, Salzburg, Munich, Lisbon, and New York. She has had solo engagements with such orchestras as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Munich Hochshule Orchestra, Kentucky Symphony, and Aspen Chamber Symphony as well as duos, piano trios, and string quartets throughout the United States.
On Tuesday, November 6 at 7:00pm, James Wiederhold will present a recital at Gallagher Theater, performing works ranging between many woodwind instruments. Mr. Wiederhold is a senior Music Performance major with a discipline in Woodwind Studies. He studies with local professionals such as Eugene Marquis, Rebecca Andres, Lon Bussell, Lauren Piccirillo, and Polina Bespalko. On November 8th, James will be a featured soloist performing Henri Rabaud’s Solo de Concours for clarinet with the Xavier University Symphonic Winds. He can also be heard accompanying Xavier University’s Men Chorus, being a featured soloist with the Men and Women’s Choruses, adding a woodwind sound to the Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing alto saxophone and flute in Xavier University’s Jazz Ensemble. Xavier has provided James the opportunity to play in the pit orchestra for Urinetown, Pirates of Penzance and Hairspray, and his dream is to one day play for Broadway shows in New York City. He will be graduating from Xavier University at the conclusion of the fall 2012 semester.
On Wednesday, November 7 at 7:30pm, the Xavier Choral Ensembles will perform in Bellarmine Chapel.
The Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Glenda Crawford, accompanied by Mr. James Wiederhold, will perform the American Folksong Susan Brown, Tollite Hostias (Praise the Lord), Stars I Shall Find, Tell My Father with soloists Tim Holliday (baritone) and Lauren Holt (violin), and A Great Big Sea with soloists James Wiederhold (flute) and Jan Corrothers (piano).
The Women’s Chorus, also under the direction of Dr. Crawford, accompanied by Ms. Jan Corrothers, will be performing I Will Be Earth, The Time of Snow, The Lamb with soloists Erin Mueller (flute) and James Wiederhold (oboe), Fair Warning with soprano soloist Rebecca Riegler and speakers Caitlin Worrell, Genevieve Hager, Eileen Herlihy, and Mary Zbacnik, and concluding with Savery, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.
The Concert Choir, under the direction of Mr. Matthew Phelps, will be performing Exaudi Deus, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor featuring soprano soloist Jordan Dunn, O Schone Nacht, Abendlied, Sure on This Shining Night and Make a Way.
On Thursday, November 8 at 7:30pm, the Symphonic Winds and Chamber Orchestra will open their 2012 concert with a shared concert of music ranging from "The Sublime to the Ridiculous" in Gallagher Theater. The first half will feature the Chamber Orchestra performing works by Handel, Mozart, Bartok, and Lauridsen. The Symphonic Winds will perform the sublime music of Turina and Strauss and feature a student concerto soloist (Jimmy Wiederhold) on Rabaud's Solo de Concours. The concert will close with Eric Whitacre's artfully crafted, but ridiculous work Godzilla Eats Las Vegas. A student film will accompany the piece.
