Construction teams hold topping out ceremony for the new buildings at the Academic Quad

The ceremony recognizes completion of the buildings without any injuries | July 2, 2009

An American flag and a small pine tree are sitting atop the final beam of the new Williams College of Business building at the corner of Dana Avenue and Ledgewood Drive. The items were placed there on Tuesday, June 30, for the official topping out of the James E. Hoff, S.J., Academic Quad.

A steel beam with dozens of signatures was hoisted into place with the tree and flag by members of the Messer and Xavier construction teams.

The tradition of topping out occurs when the last steel beam or structural element is put into place on a building. It signifies that the construction has reached the sky without loss or injury and is also meant to bestow good luck for the future inhabitants of the building.
