Chalk Talk with Head Ice Hockey Coach Dave Reno - Week 4 (2008-2009)
Coach Reno discusses the teams first victory over Middle Tennessee State and the tough game against Canisius College
10/27/08
The team broke out of their slump and scored 7 goals beating a tough Middle Tennessee State hockey team. This was the team’s first victory this year and hopefully will be a turning point for the remainder of the season. Our freshmen now know what it will take to win at this level and the victory should help their confidence.
Freshmen Brian Campbell scored his first collegiate hat trick with additional goals being scored by Mike Graber, Scott Chesnek, Justin Wheeler and Kyle Nelson. Team Captain Justin Wheeler was a real play maker adding 3 assists to his goal for a 4 point night. Freshmen defensemen Phil Merwin and Connor Barnes also played extremely well protecting our zone. Goalie David Yunez had another good night in the net with 39 saves.
The boys skated well the entire game and managed to hold the lead from the start scoring 3 times in the first period. MTSU came out firing in the second period with 3 goals, but the Musketeers responded with 2 goals of their own. Xavier again scored two quick goals in the third period to keep MTSU from getting within reach of the Musketeers. The final score was 7 to 4. The team played their best game of the season and worked well as a unit both on offense and defense. Only having two penalties for the entire game was another big plus in securing the victory.
The boys will be facing another big challenge this weekend playing Canisius at home at the Gardens, Saturday night at 9 PM. This promises to be our biggest challenge so far this year. Canisius is a very strong team who completely dominated us twice last year. Our boys have a score to settle and hopefully will be up for the task.
Hope to see you at the game!
Good Skating,
Coach Dave
