Chalk Talk with Head Ice Hockey Coach Dave Reno - Week 3 (2008-2009)

Coach Reno discusses the team's weekend series and looks forward to a meeting with Middle Tennessee State on Friday

10/20/08

The Xavier Ice Hockey team had a rough weekend dropping two games to UC. This was a big disappointment to the team, but there was some good that came out of it.

After playing a great first period on Friday night, the Musketeers found themselves down one goal on a lucky tip in. At the end of the second period, UC lead 3 – 0, but we felt we were still in the game. Unfortunately a series of penalties in the third period were too much to overcome and UC scored three additional goals. The game served as a wake up call to the players, especially the freshmen, on what it will take to be a competitive factor this year. We are much improved over last season, but so are our opponents.

Saturday’s game was a complete turn around. After UC scored the initial goal, the Musketeers rallies twice to go ahead 2 – 1. UC then scored two more goals and at the end of the second period lead Xavier 3 – 2. We scored the only goal in the third period and at the end of regulation the game was tied. The heartbreaking defeat came only 27 seconds into the overtime period on a pass that deflected off a skate blade to give UC the victory.

To start the season with a 0 – 4 record is not what the team expected. However, the team skated very well in three of the four games and their record could easily be 2 – 2. The team demonstrated they can score and our defensive play improved considerably. The coaching staff remains confident that we will have a winning record this year.

Friday night the team plays MTSU at the Cincinnati Gardens at 9 PM. This will be our first home game and a MUST win for the team. Hope to see a good fan turn out to cheer the team to their first victory.

Good Skating,

Coach Dave
