Center for Veterans Affairs holds an open house event today in honor of Veterans Day
The open house is from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Center's new location
The Center for Veterans Affairs is hosting an open house today, Monday, Nov. 11, in recognition of Veterans Day for the campus community.
The center, at 1415 Dana Ave., is a gathering place for student-veterans who are attending Xavier on the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Xavier currently has 130 student veterans enrolled and taking classes.
The open house from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. provides an opportunity for visitors to interact with the Center’s staff, see the new location that Xavier has provided for its student-veterans and hear about initiatives for the program in the coming year. Snacks and refreshments are being provided.
The Center recently launched the Care Package Campaign, a new Xavier initiative supporting an effort by veterans to help troops who are deployed overseas. The Center is accepting donations at the event for the current campaign and hopes to eventually be able to provide active-duty troops with support year-round.
Donation boxes are being placed around campus, including at the Center for Veterans Affairs, to collect donations that the Xavier veterans will send abroad to the troops.
Michael Luallen, the new director of the Center for Veterans Affairs, served six years as a U.S. Navy chaplain with a counseling background, which includes training in combat operational stress injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. Luallen has a bachelor’s degree in British Literature from The Ohio State University, a Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary. He expects to complete his MBA program at Xavier in 2014.
As director of the Center, Luallen is committed to ensuring the student-veterans at Xavier have access to every resource available to them as they transition from military life into civilian life and their professional careers. His passion for veterans finding their purpose in life is an extension of Xavier’s mission of being men and women for others.
