10/10/08
Students hear firsthand how their peers want to be identified.
On Monday, October 6, 2008, the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) hosted “Latino, Hispanic, Chicano...What’s So Different?” in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
The panel discussion exposed faculty, staff and students to current cultural issues and opportunities to increase their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. By providing shared learning opportunities designed to broaden awareness, acquire knowledge, and develop competencies, OMA seeks to strengthen the campus community, widen our understanding of diversity, and promote mutual respect and multicultural sensitivity.
The moderator for this event was Mr. Ricardo Nazario y Colón. Mr. Nazario y Colón, Director of Diversity Programs at Western Kentucky University. He has worked as a faculty member for the New York City Public School System and as an administrator for the City University of New York System. Mr. Nazario y Colón has been published in several magazines, newspapers and journals including the: Thinker Review: Eclipsing a Nappy New Millennium: Aphros and Arts across Kentucky. In addition he was featured in the documentary Coal Black Voices, which was aired by Kentucky Education Television.
Remember, the diversity of a campus community is what makes it rich. We look forward to seeing at future programming events.
