Another season has come to an end for Xavier Men’s Club Volleyball. This year, we took our talents to KC. For the second consecutive season, XUVBC competed in the NCVF National Championships, this time located in Kansas City, Missouri. The tournament proved that our team bent, but didn’t break, as we took home yet another Bronze Championship from Division II!
Similar to last year, the tournament action spanned over three days. Thursday consisted of strict pool play, Friday entailed special “challenge matches” to determine playoff seeding, and Saturday was chock full of action packed, win or go home, playoff volleyball.
Thursday and Friday did not go as expected for our team. We lost more matches than we won, and it appeared that we had left our team chemistry in Cincinnati. All of our matches were hard fought, and we wound up losing to nationally ranked Army, Washington University in St. Louis, Georgetown, and The College of New Jersey. We picked up wins against Wisconsin River-Forest and Brown. This subpar performance led to our placement in the Bronze Playoff Bracket.
After these two days of play, our team was down, but not out. We gathered ourselves on Saturday and were motivated not to leave Kansas City empty handed. It took us two days, but we finally returned to our caliber of play. We rolled through our four matches en route to the Championship title. Ferris State, Colorado School of Mines, St. John’s of Minnesota, and Brandeis all fell victim to XUVBC. We experienced a full 180-degree turn and our play showed it. We know we can beat any team in the country; it is all dependent on not beating ourselves.
We weren’t the only team to bring home some hardware though. The Women’s Club Volleyball team took home the Silver Championship from Division I-AA. This was the first time both teams had the chance to travel together to Nationals and cheer each other on and it paid off. Xavier club volleyball – we are family!
