Back In Action: Off on the right foot
Thanksgiving News Release
The new school year has caused the departure of some familiar faces, as well as the addition of new ones, for Xavier Men’s Club Volleyball. Although the clientele has changed slightly, the team motives and goals remain constant. Our three main goals are to excel in the classroom, to give back to our community, and to compete. Last season, XUVBC posted the highest overall team GPA in the men’s division, in addition to compiling over 800 hours of community service. These stats mean more to us than any win/loss record as we pride ourselves on being a club of integrity. In this first semester, we are well on our way to achieving our goals.
There are a few feelings more satisfying than knowing you have made a difference in your community. Currently, the 15 members of XUVBC have completed plenty of service hours from all different locations. Some of which include the Reggae Run, Cincinnati’s NFL Play 60 Flag Football tournament, and, our personal favorite, volleyball matches against a team of inmates at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in Kentucky. For those of you who are new to our family, for the past three years, we have been fortunate enough to travel to Kentucky to LLCC, and partake in a set of scrimmage matches against the prison’s team. This has become the highlight of our season each year because of the remarkable experience. Aside from the obvious volleyball competition, we get to break up the monotony in the lives of the inmates, and give them something to look forward to each year. We receive invaluable life lessons listening to the advice given to us. Both sides are blessed for this opportunity.
Another highlight of seasons past has been the trip to East Lansing to compete in the “Back to the Hardwood Classic” at Michigan State University. Our lightning fast offense and astounding team chemistry has yielded our best finish at a tournament in recent history. We placed 2nd overall among 26 Division II teams, and posted a (7-1) match record, winning 15 consecutive sets. We only get stronger as the year goes on, so watch out MIVA, these men from Cincinnati are awfully hungry for some titles.
