Xavier University and the Department of Art are pleased to announce our fifth annual national all media juried exhibition Art at the X. The 2011 juror is Deborah Emont Scott, Director/CEO, Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati. 136 art entries were received from 46 artists located in 21 states and Canada. Ms. Scott selected 50 pieces for exhibition. She share her experience as follows:
“I love juried exhibitions that are wide open, such as Xavier University’s Department of Art’s annual exhibition Art at the X – a national all media juried competition that is open to all artists 18 and older. There is no expectation of theme, media, or even level of experience. One hopes, of course, to receive entries from committed artists who view the exhibition as an opportunity to show their work and advance their careers, and perhaps even receive valuable criticism from the local art press and the juror. Usually there are more paintings and works on paper than sculpture (easier to ship?) and more representational art than abstract. But every great group show has some wonderful surprises and this year’s Art at the X is no exception. We see artists embracing new technologies as well as plumbing the expressive potential of the old technique of graphite on paper. And even the most traditional themes, such as landscape, are handled in a 21st-century way; the artists are looking very closely at what is here and now. Each of the 50 works included in the exhibition has been made in the past two years. Viewers will find them fresh, provocative, and engaging.”
Please join us for the artists’ reception on Friday, August 26th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The awards will be presented at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallery. Meet the artists and enjoy the art and refreshments.
