AK Steel Corp Chairman, President & CEO James Wainscott at Distinguished Speaker Series
James L. Wainscott, Chairman, President and CEO of AK Steel Corporation, will speak at Xavier University on Thursday, February 19 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in Duff Banquet Hall located in Xavier’s Cintas Center. This is the first presentation for the Williams College of Business Distinguished Speakers Series for 2009. Mr. Wainscott will speak on “Competing to Win in Today’s Global Steel Business.”
Attendance for this event is available only through table sponsorships. A table of eight can be reserved for $2,000. The proceeds are used for student and faculty development. Under Mr. Wainscott’s leadership, AK Steel achieved a dramatic turnaround to become a globally competitive company. AK Steel is now recognized as a World-Class Steelmaker and has been named by Fortune magazine as one of “America’s Most Admired Companies.” Cincy magazine last year honored the company with a “Manny” Award for excellence in manufacturing.
Mr. Wainscott began his steel industry career in 1982 with the former National Steel Corporation, holding a number of increasingly responsible positions at plant and corporate headquarters levels. In 1995, he joined AK Steel as vice president and treasurer, later advancing to senior vice president and CFO. In 2003, he was named president, CEO and a member of the board of directors of AK Steel and, in January 2006, he was elected chairman of the board of directors.
Mr. Wainscott currently serves as chairman of the board of directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute, vice chairman of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and is a member of the board of trustees of the Anthony Muñoz Foundation and the Cincinnati Zoo. He is also a member of the Washington, DC–based Business Roundtable, the Ohio Business Roundtable and is a past board member of the Specialty Steel Industry of North America. He and his wife, Darla, currently serve as co-chairs of the Campaign for Excellence for the Children’s Home of Cincinnati.
He graduated magna cum laude from Ball State University with a BS in accounting and he holds an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He has been honored with the Miller College of Business Award of Distinction from Ball State University in 2007 and Notre Dame’s Distinguished Alumni Award for 2008.
AK Steel is headquartered in West Chester, with its largest plant and research center located in Middletown. The company also has production facilities elsewhere in Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Indiana. AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels, primarily for the automotive, appliance, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets.
Xavier’s Distinguished Speakers Series brings top-level business, academic and political leaders to campus to discuss world issues, introduce new ideas, generate discussion and further the education mission of the college. Additionally, students, faculty, alumni and members of the business community have the opportunity to interact with the speaker at each event.
