Department Mission
The Music & Theatre Department contributes intellectually and artistically to the cultural life of the University and its surrounding community.
Music is an art and a science, encompassing the theoretical concepts of sound, historical perspective, aesthetics and performance. Students develop an understanding and appreciation of the creative process by working conceptually with the elements of music, building electronic music skills, developing the ability to read and realize musical notation, learning compositional processes, exploring music literature and genres, and developing and defending musical judgments.
Do you love music? Do you sing, dance, play an instrument, or like to compose? If so, we have a place reserved for you in our lessons, ensembles, and classes. Participation in music is open to any student at Xavier, regardless of their major. If you are a prospective student, we encourage you to come and sit in on a rehearsal, class or lesson. If you are a current student, our building is Edgecliff Hall - come and explore your music possibilities! We welcome you to explore our department, and its programs, and we look forward to your involvement at Xavier!
