Smooth Transitions Summer Bridge Program

Smooth Transitions (ST) is an initiative of the Office of Multicultural Affairs developed to assist first year students of color with their transition and acclimation to Xavier University.  Smooth Transitions is comprised of a bridge program and year long mentor program.  Smooth Transitions is culturally based and focuses on the holistic development of students of color.

Smooth Transitions Program Objectives

  • To increase the retention of students of color ensuring a higher number of students of color graduating from Xavier University.
  • To make students of color aware of campus resources and services available at Xavier University.
  • To encourage interaction between students of color and faculty and staff, as well as the campus community at large.
  • To educate students on issues of diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice.

Smooth Transitions Core Values

Academic enhancement

Students will learn study, time management, and stress management skills that will encourage scholastic achievement by participating in seminars and study groups. 



Intercultural exploration

Students will participate in activities that will increase their consciousness about their own cultural identity, but also learn to understand and interact effectively with others who differ in beliefs, behaviors, values, and worldview. 



Social adjustment


Students will become aware of the many campus resources by engaging in various activities with other students that have similar experiences as them to develop a sense of belonging and encourage healthy lifestyles. 



Leadership development


Students will become equipped with the necessary tools and skills to become more involved in student activities and take a more proactive role in their communities, build self-confidence and self-awareness by participating in programs. 



Service learning

Students will engage in service projects that will enable them to build character and knowledge, as well as civic, personal, and social responsibility.
