Native American History Month (November 1-30)

What began at the turn of the last century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions made by the first Americans to the country’s growth has resulted in a whole month set aside for that purpose. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved designated a joint resolution designating November "National American Indian Heritage Month." The heritage of the Native American will be celebrated at Xavier University in a number of ways.

Please follow the links below to see how Xavier University is celebrating this rich culture.
  • November 2-6, 2009, Impact of Gaming on Native America is a display of facts and figures reflecting the history of the gaming industry on Native American culture.  The exhibit also highlights perspectives on Ohio issue #3, which has the potential to allow casinos in the state as early as 2010.
  • November 6, 2009, First Friday Fellowship is an opportunity for the Xavier community to fellowship and focus in on ways to engage the cultural heritage month at hand.  This month, we'll hear from Xavier photographer Greg Rust and his daugher Erin about their activism and connection to Cheyenne culture.
  • November 10, 2009, Beyond Being Indian will feature guest Guy W. Jones who will speak about the historical and cultural perspectives, for good and bad, of America's first nation people.

Xavier University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, a department in the Division of Student Life and Leadership, exists to help the University realize its diversity goals.  Multicultural Affairs provides services and programs to enrich the academic, cultural and social experiences of Xavier students.
