Office of Multicultural Affairs

Black History Month

Each February, the Office Multicultural Affairs sponsors a series of cultural events that are directly related to the histories of African and African American people. What was once Negro History Week is now a tradition that is practiced throughout the world.

At Xavier, cultural and academic presentations are conducted in a collaborative manner to bring about historical growth and understanding of diversity, multiculturalism and social justice.

This year "BLACK" was held on Wednesday, February 4, at 6pm. Faculty, staff, students and administrators from Northern Kentucky University and Xavier University, helped the audience understand the connotation of the word "black" and its long-time impact on all culture.

Providing cultural programs and celebrating heritage months will ensure diversity is part of the fabric of the institution instead of a viewed as a problem to solve. These events also serve as opportunities to:

  1. Challenge campus community to participate in cultural activities and realize the benefits of living in a multicultural world;
  2. Increase campus community understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity;
  3. Bridge racial and cultural divides in the campus community;
  4. Broaden understanding of diversity, and promote mutual respect and multicultural sensitivity; and
  5. Provide shared learning opportunities designed to increase awareness, acquire knowledge, and develop competencies that will strengthen the campus community
