Scholarships
For any new first-year student enrolling for the academic
year at Xavier. The student must declare French, German
or Spanish as a major. Awarded on the basis of a competitive
exam, usually given in March. One $2000 scholarship
is awarded to the top scorer on each examination and
is renewable up to four years provided the recipient
is a full-time student and maintains an overall 3.00
grade point average freshman year and a 3.25 thereafter.
The Joseph E. and Jeanne Bourgeois French Awards
Established by the family and friends of the late Joseph
and Jeanne Bourgeois and presented to students achieving
excellence in the study of French.
The Joseph E. Bourgeois German Award
Presented to the student displaying the most proficiency
in the use of the German language.
Alliance Francaise John Eick Memorial Scholarship
Granted to a student of French for study abroad. The
annual scholarship is usually for around $750.00.
Fredin Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship program covers a substantial part
of the cost of one academic year's study at the Sorbonne
in Paris, France. Scholarship competition is offered
annually and open to all Xavier students, regardless
of major. One must demonstrate an interest in and
aptitude for language study as well as seriousness
of purpose for study abroad. Applications are available
each fall semester through the Office of the Associate
Dean of Arts and Sciences and Social Sciences.
The Goethe Institute Award
Presented to a student achieving excellence in the
study of German at the intermediate level.
The Matias G. Vega Spanish Award
Presented to the senior demonstrating the highest linguistic
achievement in Spanish and interest in Hispanic culture.
