Help with Accents
See the information below if you need assistance typing accented characters in order to complete the dissertation form.
Windows Instructions
If you know the ASCII key strokes for accented characters, you can use them when filling in the information requested on the form. An alternative is to use the Character Map that is part of the Windows operating system. It runs concurrently with other programs and you access it via the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Character Map also provides the ASCII key strokes in case you have forgotten any of the ones you need to use. The ASCII information appears in the lower right corner of the Character Map window when you have highlighted a character.
To use the Character Map:
- Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Character Map in Windows 95 or Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map in Windows 98.
If Character Map is not installed, you can add it by going to Start>Settings>Control Panels. Select the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. Select the Windows Setup tab. Double-click on Accessories. Place a check mark in front of Character Map and click OK to close the open windows. You may be prompted to insert your Windows 95/98 CD or diskettes to finish installing Character Map.
- Look through the chart of available characters. Click once to select the character you need; next click the Select button in the upper right corner of the window.
- You can copy and paste the character to use it, or you can make note of the ASCII code and type it in at the appropriate point on the form.
- If you choose to copy and paste, select the character you want to use and then click the Copy button. Go back to the form, place the cursor where you want the character to appear and go to Edit>Paste or use the keystroke <Ctrl>+v to paste the character.
- If you prefer to type the ASCII code, look in the lower right corner of the Character Map window to see the code of the character you have selected. When you return to the form, simply type in the code (e.g., <Alt> + 0233 for é), holding down the <Alt> key while you type the number.
Note: pasting characters from Character Map or using the ASCII code for characters works in most applications, including e-mail programs--Outlook Express or Eudora-- and word processors.
