Xavier Places Third at NAHSE

Christina Swift
Recruitment and Promotions Coordinator

Last fall the HSA program sponsored a team in the annual Everett V. Fox Student Case Analysis and Presentation Competition hosted by the National Association of Health Services Executives. The competition is part of a scholarship program that utilizes the case study methodology of teaching to provide students with an educational experience that enhances their problem analysis and presentation skills. Xavier's team, consisting of Prachi Asher, Jenelle Holloman and Calvin Wright, placed third among 20 schools. First place went to the University of Michigan and second place went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Each team had three weeks to analyze a case study before giving a 20-minute presentation before a panel of judges representing leaders in the health care field, corporate sponsors and academia professionals. The case competition was a challenge in applying creativity, knowledge and experience to analyze diverse, real-world issues facing a health care organization.

The HSA program has sponsored teams in the past, but this is the first time a Xavier team has ranked. Xavier also faced tough competition from other nationally ranked schools including the University of Michigan, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Georgetown University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Outstanding Student

Christina Swift
Recruitment and Promotions Coordinator

The University recently recognized student Meghan Yeager with the Outstanding Contribution to Graduate Students Award. Yeager consistently works to insure that her classmates maintain a presence in both the on-campus and off-campus communities. Her most significant contribution has been in the area of community service. She organized all of the HSA activities, including walks, food drives and receptions. She is the go-to graduate student when it comes to getting classmates and program members involved. With her outstanding service and leadership, Yeager truly represents Xavier's mission and serves as a wonderful example to her classmates.

HSA in the Community

Jackie Lucas
Class of 2010

During the spring semester, the Class of 2010 visited Fernside Center for Grieving Children to make scrapbooks of the different activities in which the children participated.

Other community service events included the Health Expo with the Center for Closing the Health Gap in Greater Cincinnati and Walk Now for Autism.

Students also wrote grant proposals for four small not-for-profit organizations in Greater Cincinnati.

The grant proposals went before the grant review board, which is made up of the part-time evening students in Karen Kent's Strategic Marketing and Management class. The review board rewarded the best proposal-Fernside and Oral Health Council-with a $4,000 grant.
