Spring 2010 Chair's Update

Ida Critelli Schick
Professor and Chair/Director

Xavier’s campus and the graduate program in Health Services Administration are alive with activity this spring. The Conaton Learning Commons and the new Williams College of Business will open this fall. The newest construction project on campus—a residence and dining complex—will be completed by fall 2011.

The Department of Health Services Administration also is undergoing change and growth. A new undergraduate major in health services and a BS-to-MHSA honors program have been approved by faculty and will soon be reviewed by the college’s curriculum committee. The proposal will be considered by the Board of Undergraduate Studies this spring or in the fall. The new programs should begin in fall 2011.

Dean Mark Meyers and I also have begun discussions on creating a MHSA/JD degree. A proposed curriculum has been sent to the associate dean of the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.  The college’s proposed doctoral program in Leadership Studies (with a cognate in Health Services) is complete and has been sent to the curriculum committee. Upon approval, it will go to the Board of Graduate Studies for review. Final approval comes from the Higher Learning Commission. Once obtained, the program should begin in fall 2011 or spring 2012.

The graduate program in Health Services Administration is the department’s core strength but will soon have the support of undergraduate, doctoral and joint degrees.

This academic year brings great changes. They are exciting, challenging and significant for the future of the department. Please join in our excitement and share your ideas for improvements and progress as we continue our mission of educating leaders for the future.
