Fall 2010 Chair's Update

Ida Critelli Schick
Professor and Chair/Director

The pace of the hectic world of health care, where many of you work, is matched by the pace of our many activities here in Xavier's Department of Health Services Administration.

First among our activities is the search for a new chair of the program. Initial interviews with candidates took place earlier this fall and the process is currently well under way.

HSA will reconnect with graduates in the greater Cincinnati area in the Conaton Board Room on Dec. 14. Other regional receptions will be held in the spring.

This academic year's first Women's Resource Group lunch meeting was held Nov. 11. The next lunch is planned for early spring 2011 as part of the effort to increase networking opportunities among MHSA alumnae.

The undergraduate HSA programs have been approved by the College Curriculum Committee and go to the deans and Board of Undergraduate Studies for approval, while the proposal for the college doctorate program in leadership studies is in the Office of the Provost for approval. Discussions about adding a collaborative MHSA/JD are moving along. Preliminary work is being done to determine whether or not there is opportunity for an international collaborative HSA program.

This year, 34 students are searching for residencies. Next year there will be 28 students looking for residencies. If your organization is considering a residency or you know of a residency opportunity, please contact me at 513-745-3716 or schicki@xavier.edu. Congratulations to two excellent preceptors, Dee Ellingwood and Bill Kent. Both are senior executives at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Dee and Bill have taken two residents every year for several years and been true teachers, mentors and preceptors.

I wish you happy, blessed and safe holidays.
