MHSA Community Service Update
Marc W. Roderick and Nicole DiLabbio - 2nd year Community Service Liaisons
With the fall semester in full swing, students have been busy the past two months volunteering throughout the Cincinnati community. In October, the entire 2nd year class (26 students), participated in the Pink Ribbon Luncheon benefiting breast cancer. The class helped set up and prepare for the event by boxing, moving and arranging items to ensure the success and overall organization of the event.
In addition to the 2nd year’s class project, both 1st and 2nd year students have been continuing the partnership with Taylor Elementary School on a weekly basis. Xavier students are tutoring the elementary students in reading and/or mathematics. This effort is part of an overall community effort to help Taylor Elementary pass their Ohio Achievement Test at the end of April. MHSA students are working alongside Cincinnati Children’s employees and UC students to ensure this effort is a success.
At the end October, 20 students volunteered at Mercy Ministries Taste of the Neighborhood Halloween Event. Students participated in wide ranging efforts including serving local food, organizing raffles, among other activities.
Finally, at the end of December, students will be “adopting-a-family” and purchasing Christmas presents for them. Also, many students from both the 1st and 2 year classes have continued to, or begun volunteering at various local organizations and hospitals, including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
