Dean's Update Fall 2012

Mark Meyers
Dean, College of Social Sciences, Health and Education

Have you ever had a dream come true?

I know this is a blanket statement that many people can answer in a variety of ways, but I recently had this happen in my life. No, I did not win the lottery and no I did not win the Nobel Prize, instead we had an event on campus that was literally a dream come true for me.

Since my arrival at Xavier in 2007, one of the areas that I have continued to stress is collaboration. Collaboration across our college, collaboration with our community, and collaboration with our professions are directly related to our mission as a Jesuit Catholic Institution, in my opinion. On October 22, we celebrated our first Healthcare in Practice Session (HIP), an exercise where a community member makes a presentation to students across the entire healthcare spectrum on our campus. This event was the result of a great deal of work by many people, too numerous to name them all here, but needless to say the success of the event was due to the efforts of many Health Services and CSSHE faculty and staff.

Not dream worthy enough for you? Let me explain a bit more. The event itself was a terrific first attempt, however the message that the HIP delivers is clear. Our Healthcare faculty and staff are at the cutting edge of best practice, and the Inter-Professional Education that is resulting has the potential to not only improve our individual programs, but to improve Xavier Health even more.

Thank you all for helping this one poor soul live a dream; What’s your dream for Xavier Health? If you have not yet told us, what are you waiting for?
