Welcome to the Department of Mathematics! Xavier has had a major in mathematics since 1916. While the program continues to evolve, our primary goal remains unchanged. We want to provide an educational environment in which students can develop their abilities to undertake intellectually demanding tasks in mathematics. Both of our programs support Xavier's mission by emphasizing critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the precise expression of ideas in the respective languages of the two disciplines.
With introductory classes of sizes in the 20s and smaller upper level classes, individual attention and faculty expertise are readily available. Each student in our department receives individual counseling from members of the department. The faculty believe that the best teaching can be done only when there is close faculty-student interaction for discussion, thinking, and exploring.
The mathematics major is a broad-based program which prepares students for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service in an increasingly technical society. Through careful advising and personal attention, the program is tailored to meet the needs of students who wish to enter a career in business or industry, teach at the secondary or post-secondary level, or pursue graduate education in a variety of disciplines.
