Mathematics Major Requirements

Math classEvery Xavier student takes a liberal arts core curriculum consisting of courses in history, fine arts, literature, foreign language, philosophy, science, social science, and theology. Mathematics majors must include any two of the following courses in their 9 credit hours of science: Biology 160-161, 162-163 (Biology I, II and Labs), Chemistry 160-161, 162-163 (Chemistry I, II and Labs), Physics 161-170, 163-172 (University Physics I, II and Labs).
We additionally recommend that the foreign language requirement be fulfilled with either French or German.

Mathematics majors must take Computer Science 170 (Computer Science I).

The major requires 42 hours of mathematics courses, including those numbered 170, 171, 220 (Calculus I, II, III), 180 (Discrete Math), 210, 240 (both Linear Algebra), 230 (Differential Equations), 340 (Abstract Algebra), 370 (Real Analysis), and four elective courses from those numbered 200 - 397.

Mathematics majors must maintain a 2.000 cumulative grade average in their mathematics and computer science courses, and perform successfully on the Major Field Test in Mathematics.
