Mathematics Major Requirements
Every Xavier student takes a liberal arts core curriculum
consisting of courses in history, fine arts, literature,
foreign language, philosophy, science, social science,
and theology. Mathematics majors must include any two
of the following courses in their 9 credit hours of
science: Biology 160-161, 162-163 (Biology I, II and
Labs), Chemistry 160-161, 162-163 (Chemistry I, II
and Labs), Physics 161-170, 163-172 (University Physics
I, II and Labs).
We additionally recommend that the foreign language
requirement be fulfilled with either French or German.
Mathematics majors must take Computer Science 170
(Computer Science I).
The major requires 42 hours of mathematics courses,
including those numbered 170, 171, 220 (Calculus I,
II, III), 180 (Discrete Math), 210, 240 (both Linear
Algebra), 230 (Differential Equations), 340 (Abstract
Algebra), 370 (Real Analysis), and four elective courses
from those numbered 200 - 397.
Mathematics majors must maintain a 2.000 cumulative
grade average in their mathematics and computer science
courses, and perform successfully on the Major Field
Test in Mathematics.
