Instructions

These five library tutorials will help you to do research more effectively, saving you time. Hopefully, they will also help you obtain higher grades on research projects.

Order: For best results, please do the tutorials in following order:

Defining the question Defining the Question
Identifying resources Identifying Resources
Improving a search Improving a Search
Evaluating Websites Evaluating Websites
Preventing Plagiarism

In addition, please proceed through each page of xu.tutor by clicking the next>> button.

Completion time: Each tutorial takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Navigation: There are between 9 to 18 pages in each tutorial. Page through the tutorials using the next>> button, located in the bottom right hand corner of each page. Return to previous pages as often as you wish, using the <<backbutton located in the bottom left hand corner of each page. You may also use the menu on the left hand side of each xu.tutor page.

Right navigation menu

Glossary links: A glossary is provided to define unfamiliar terms. Glossary terms are in red boldface; e.g., authority control. When you click a glossary term a small window opens displaying the definition. It is essential that you click the <<close window>> hot spot before clicking another link.

Example links: Example links open small windows displaying database features and other information. Most of these are in blue boldface; e.g., example. Again, it is essential that you click the <<close window>> hot spot before clicking another link.

Demos: Demos provide an interactive search experience using the following databases:

  • Academic Search Premier, a general database
  • Business Source Premier, a business database
  • ERIC, an education database
  • PsycINFO, a psychology database

Demo links are in green boldface; e.g., demo adoption search in Academic Search Premier.. When you click a demo link the resulting screen is divided into two frames. Follow the instructions in the left frame while typing responses in the right frame. The right frame actually displays a "live" database. Please be patient as it may take a couple of minutes for the database to load. Please complete all demos. When finished do not log out. Click the <<back button to return to xu.tutor.

Off-campus access: If you are doing these tutorials off-campus (at home, at work, etc.), the demos will require authentication. Just enter your MyXU portal user name and password. For more information about this process please see Off-campus Access to Library Resources.
