14. Finding articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers

Use research databases to find articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers. When your search results appear on the screen, there are three ways to obtain a copy of the article: electronic, in paper, or through ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan services.

Electronic Availability

Embedded Full-Text

Sometimes the full-text of an article is embedded right in the database and you will see either an HTML or a PDF link to the full-text. When given this choice, always use the PDF link, as the PDF version includes page numbers and HTML version does not.

The Find It Window

If the full-text is not embedded in the database you will see one of these two icons underneath each citation in your search results. When you click the Find It icon it will open a new window and display your electronic, paper, and interlibrary loan options. The Find It window will look different depending on the database. In the Find It window you may see:

  1. The complete citation for the aricle (1)
  2. A link or links to the full-text of the aricle, if available (2)
  3. Print holdings, if available (3)
  4. A link to ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan services (4).

Paper Availability

If there are no electronic holdings offered via Find It, you can click the link to XPLORE or print holdings to see if a paper copy is available. You can then either come to the library and photocopy the article or click the ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan link to request an electronic copy of the article.

ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan Services

If there are no electronic copies of the article, click the ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan link. If you are new to ILLiad, you will need to set up an account. Submit your request and the article will be posted electronically in your ILLiad account. You will receive an email when the article is available to be viewed electronically.

Articles in Bibliographies

If you have a citation that did not come from a database search, click the Journals @ XU tab on the library's homepage. Type the title of the journal you need. You will be provided with a list of databases which have the full-text of that journal and the years of access (video clip).

If the journal is not available electronically, you will be told that 0 records have been retrieved for this search. Click the link to ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan and submit your request. The article will be posted electronically in your ILLiad account.

If you determine the journal is available in the annex or in microfilm/microfiche, click the link to ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan and submit your request. The article will be posted electronically in your ILLiad account.
