In this demo you will discover thesaurus terms for keyword phrases not in the thesaurus.
If necessary, follow the remote authentication instructions on your screen.
You are viewing ERIC, 1966-present, an education database.
Note the checkmark next to Search words in thesaurus. This means that the thesaurus is turned on.
Type teens in the Search for textbox.
Click the Submit Search button.
The database responds with the message: No subjects in the thesaurus match the term teens .
The database provides three options:
The third option displays a list of subjects starting with the word, teen.
The second option displays a list of documents that contain the keyword phrase, teens.
The first option displays a list of possible thesaurus terms.
Click the first option.
In the list of possible thesaurus terms, adolescents is the most appropriate.
Click View Thesaurus next to the term, adolescents.
The database will display all related terms for the thesaurus term, adolescents.
Check the boxes beside adolescents, early adolescents, high school students, preadolescents, secondary school students and youth. Click on combine terms.
The database will return a list of documents that include the above subject headings.
Viewing document titles confirm that the database has suggested an appropriate thesaurus term from your keyword phrase.
