2a. What is Copyrighted?

• It is generally safe to assume that all recent, commercially-produced works, such as current songs, movies, television, and games are copyrighted. (video clip).
• However, copyright also protects any "original work of authorship" that is "fixed in any tangible medium of expression," such as writing something down on paper or typing and saving a Word document.
• Copyright applies not just to printed works, but also emails, digital or print photographs, Web sites, songs, films, plays, dances, sculptures, prepared speeches, architecture, books, artwork, musical scores, software, games, doodles, etc. All of these are copyrighted.
• To be copyrighted, works can be in almost any format, can contain almost any content, and do not have to have a © symbol.
