When is Citation Unnecessary?

  • When you are using your own original observations, thoughts, or opinions.
  • When you are using "common knowledge" or information which can be found in many places and is likely to be known by many people. Examples:
    • George Washington was the first president of the United States.
    • Many people decorate evergreen trees at Christmas.
    • Elizabeth II is the Queen of Great Britain.

When in doubt, simply cite your source.
